As I spent Valentines Day 2020 across the ocean from my signification other – I chose to spend my evening at the theater and saw “Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)” This 2020 film is based on the DC Comic character “Harley Quinn” who plays the love interest of the infamous “Joker”…although this film begins in the aftermath of their breakup.
I won’t give anything away, spoiler wise, however I will say:
- It’s exactly what it’s supposed to be: entertaining. Don’t go into this with some expectation of a DEEP plot or eloquent script (it’s rated R btw) – it’s comedy, action and comic book feel.
- Equal appeal for the ladies and the gents.
For the men – who might not be so interested – you get plenty of pretty ladies to gaze at for 2 hours, lots of action/guns/fight scenes and a generally fun movie.
For the ladies – you get all of the above PLUS a strong dose of female camaraderie AND some roller derby.
- Fun soundtrack and the fashion/aesthetic is colorful, and full of sex appeal without seeming demeaning.
While I was enjoying a glass of white wine in my theater recliner, I couldn’t help but notice the female reception to the movie. At various points I could hear (and sense) the chuckles of the ladies, or hear when the group felt vindicated, emboldened or proud of the characters.
It was Valentines Day, but I got a very strong feeling of female friendship and bond during the film. Funny enough I was surrounded by couples – but also mothers and daughters, friends and singles. I ended up (before the movie started) chatting and sharing some laughs with the couples to the right and left of me. Overall, it was a really positive way to spend Valentines Day and a really enjoyable film.
