Destiny is a CHOICE

“Destiny is not a matter of chance but a matter of choice; It is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved”

William Jennings Bryan

As you can see from the photos below – I REALLY believe everything is a choice, so much so that I had it tattooed on my leg. Now, I got this tattoo in the midst of my “weight loss journey” but I think it resonates for me far beyond fitness or food.

In my mind, everything I do (or say) is MINE. I OWN those decisions and ultimately I am the only thing in support of, or standing in the way of, my success or failures. It drives me absolutely bonkers when I witness, or hear, people saying things “happen” to them or that something wasn’t their “fault” – because things are almost always within our control. Yes, sometimes things “happen” but in a majority of scenarios that I hear about, things could have been mitigated.

This is that “tough love” moment – so if you’re not one to respond well to it, #sorrynotsorry
Stop walking around like life is happening TO you. It’s not. If you are over worked and under paid, that is very likely because YOU allow it. If you are in an unfulfilling relationship that makes you feel unhappy, then YOU have the power to leave that relationship. If your needs are not being met or boundaries are being crossed by friends, family or colleagues, then YOU have to open your mouth and say something. If you aren’t making the progress in your personal or professional life that you feel you desire then YOU need to reevaluate and do some work!

I get it, I do, YES sometimes you can’t really control that tree falling onto your car – however – claim your part of the responsibility for whatever stress it causes! Maybe YOU should have gotten that tree trimmed ages ago but were putting it off because of cost or time, or maybe YOU are upset because you don’t have insurance that you COULD have but didn’t want to pay for…When you’re at least AS prepared as you can be, you mitigate a lot of unnecessary frustration for yourself and those close to you. Dave Ramsey calls it a “stupid tax” whenever something costs him money that COULD have been avoided – and I think that tax doesn’t just take money, but it translates to increased stress, time taken from enjoyable people or events, negative self talk (shaming or guilt), and a whole mess of other things that no one enjoys!

Create something great. Something spectacular. Do not settle for mediocrity and do not morph the natural (and foreseeable) consequences of your OWN actions (or inaction) into “blame” for someone or something else to take.

It’s funny – because this quote has become sort of a “mantra” for me during my long runs while training for my half marathon…who would have thought? I sometimes just repeat “destiny” over and over but it seems to help!

**Side note – This is NOT with regard to any sort of trauma, disease, grief/loss or human attacks on each other such as rape/sexual assault or similar scenarios.  Those instances are certainly not a matter of choice and therefore are not meant to be interpreted/considered in my above commentary.**
